‘The Shadows’ are Released

The Shadows Behind by Kristi Petersen Schoonover is now available to purchase. You can pick up a copy at Amazon here or Barnes & Noble here.

In this disturbing new collection from award-winning short story author Schoonover, a hungry volcano demands more and a talking piranha predicts the future. A plastic Easter bunny taunts a struggling husband, ancient Egyptian jars tempt a former convict, and a man-eating tree mocks a bereft mother. Kudzu devours a sleeping town, and seagull bones whisper long-buried secrets.

These monsters are simply stand-ins for those we face every day: shape-shifting grief and overwhelming terror; soul-consuming love and all-possessing fear. We can rail against them or embrace them, but they are always there.

Waiting, and unconquerable.

Advance Praise for ‘The Shadows Behind’

Advance Praise for The Shadows Behind

Kristi Petersen Schoonover’s upcoming collection, The Shadows Behind, is already garnering early praise from notable authors.

John Palisano, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Ghost Heart and vice president of the Horror Writers Association, writes, “Kristi Petersen Schoonover’s The Shadows Behind explores the uncanny, strange, and underlying darkness behind white picket fences. The stories that make up The Shadows Behind are curated as perfectly as a rose garden, only one will need to watch out for the thorns . . . and the bodies buried below, nourishing their roots.”

Palisano is not the only award-winning author talking about The Shadows Behind. Lauren Baratz-Logsted, author of Zombie Abbey, recently wrote: “Kristi Petersen Schoonover does it again with this original collection of observant and haunting stories that will leave readers turning pages long into the night as they tell themselves: Just one more story . . . just one more . . .

The collection, which features an introduction by Stacy Horn (Damnation Island, Perfect Harmony), will be released April 30 from Books & Boos Press.

‘The Shadows Behind’ Cover Reveal

Books & Boos Press is excited to release the cover art for The Shadows Behind, the new short story collection by Kristi Petersen Schoonover slated for release next month. The artist is A.L. Cortez.

“This was a fun cover to work on, because all of Schoonover’s stories ultimately deal with the things we hide. I knew I wanted to incorporate a woman’s figure, yet somehow keep her hidden so as not to reveal all her secrets. That shadows is in the title of the book was serendipity,” Cortez said.

The Shadows Behind will be released April 30. Preorders will be available in April.

Schoonover is a prolific short story writer, a four-time winner of the Toasted Cheese Literary Journal’s Dead of Winter short story contest, and has been the recipient of Norman Mailer Writers Colony residencies three times, among other accolades.

August Happenings: Sales, Releases, and Jeff Strand

Books & Boos Press is thrilled to announce Jeff Strand will have an original short story in our upcoming darkly funny anthology, tentatively titled A Sharp Stick in the Eye (and Other Funny Stories), edited by Rob Smales (you can find our submission guidelines here). Strand is the four-time Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of 30-plus books, including Blister, A Bad Day for Voodoo, and Wolf Hunt. His most recent releases are the YA novel Stranger Things Have Happened, and Everything Has Teeth, a short story collection. That he agreed to be in the anthology had all of us here doing a rather silly yet utterly respectful happy dance.

We’re also excited for Three on a Match’s upcoming release on September 5! Keep an eye out for the book trailer, which will be made public mid-August. Three on a Match is the second installment of the Terror Project, and features novellas from talented authors Melissa Crandall, g. Elmer Munson, and Kristi Petersen Schoonover, and is already garnering accolades. Lauren Baratz-Logsted, author of The Twin’s Daughter, calls it “spooky, sinister, spine-tingling: these three keep-you-up-all-night tales . . . have it all!”

In celebration of Three on a Match’s release, we’re going to offer the first installment in the Terror Project, Triplicity, on sale in the week leading up to the publication date. Keep an eye out for a deep discount on this fantastic trio of novellas from Tony Tremblay, Rob Smales, and Stacey Longo!

Upcoming Releases and a Cover Reveal!

We’ve been busy here at Books & Boos Press, signing authors, organizing projects, laying out and editing manuscripts, and preparing for our upcoming releases.

First up: Three on a Match, our second installment in the Terror Project series, is in the final proofing stages. The book features three novellas: “Splendid Chyna” by Kristi Petersen Schoonover, “All’s Well That Ends” by g. Elmer Munson, and “Thicker Than Water” by Melissa Crandall. We know the collection is amazing, but don’t just take our word for it: Patrick Rea, the director of Nailbiter and Arbor Demon, proclaims, “Three on a Match is a frightening menagerie of horror that offers a shocking blend of well-crafted tales to keep you up at night. My imagination was fueled by this nail-biting collection!”

Ana Lucia Cortez has once again done a fantastic job on the cover, tying in elements from the first book in the series, Triplicity, while giving this collection an imagery all its own. We’re proud to reveal the cover to you now!

Opening for Submissions in June

Our dark humor anthology, tentatively titled A Sharp Stick in the Eye (and Other Funny Stories) will open for submissions from June 1–September 30. Payment will be a flat fee of $50 per story. We’ll have more exciting announcements about this project soon, but for now, keep an eye on our submissions page!

Other News

Our imprint, Farmer’s Daughter Press, has just signed author Ken Keeney to pen a children’s Christmas picture book for release in 2018. It’s a sweet, rhyming tale of two siblings preparing for the holiday with their family. We’re also pleased to announce the cover and illustrations will be done by Ogmios, a talented artist whose previous designs can be seen in The Moon is Dead by Vlad V. and Lightning (an RPG by OTB Comics).

Finally, the third book in the Terror Project series is underway, with three more authors working on deliciously twisted tales for our final installment. We’ll keep you updated on this collection, slated for release in spring 2018!
